Professional musicians, scholars, and composers from 22 countries met at the third FREEMUSE World Conference on 25-26 November 2006. Over two intensive days, they documented how music censorship is being implemented in countries all over the world. There were reports from Cuba in the west to Indonesia and China in the east. From Belarus in the north to Zimbabwe and South Africa in the south. Several musicians taking part in the conference similarly have already initiated various collaborations.

FREEMUSE 3rd World Conference on Music & Censorship was initiated by DÜŞÜN (Association for Freedom of Expression), PEN Turkey and Pera festival with the collaboration of Istanbul Bilgi University.

FREEMUSE (FREEdom of MUSical Expression) is an independent international organization advocating freedom of expression for musicians and composers worldwide. FREEMUSE is a membership organization with its secretariat based in Copenhagen, Denmark and was born of the 1st World Conference on Music and Censorship held in Copenhagen in November 1998. The conference joined together professionals from diverse fields and countries – musicians, journalists, researchers, record industry professionals and human rights activists – to examine, discuss and document a wide variety of abuses from the apparently benign to the overtly extreme. The alarmingly widespread nature of censorship in music prompted the conference attendees to initiate the creation of a new organization, FREEMUSE. As its guide are the principles outlined in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights as they apply specifically to musicians and composers.
