Training: "Strengthening Respect for Human Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Turkey-III", 1-3 December 2006

Training:

The third training of the project "Strengthening the Respect for Human Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Turkey", conducted  by Istanbul Bilgi University Human Rights Law Research Center and supported by Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, held in 1-3 December 2006 for lawyers of from the bars and NGOs: Association for the Protection of the Blind Konya Office, Muscular Diseases Association of Turkey, Turkish Federation of the Blind, Altinokta Foundation for the Blind, Foundation for Handicapped Persons, Turkish Spastic Children Foundation, Association of Multiple Sclerosis of Turkey Ankara Office, Association of Multiple Sclerosis of Turkey Head Office, Adapazari Federation for the Persons with Disabilities, Association for Persons with Disabilities of Turkey Ankara Office, Association for Persons with Disabilities of Turkey Istanbul Office, The Society of Spinal Cord Paralytics-Istanbul, The Society of Spinal Cord Paralytics-Bursa, Disability Rights Commission of Bursa Bar, Altinokta Association of Blind People Head Office,Tekirdag Bar, Nevsehir Bar, Ankara Bar, Kirsehir Bar, Eskisehir Bar and Association for Persons with Disabilities of Turkey Anatolia Office.

The training lasted three days. Presentations regarding the standards set out in United Nations, Council of Europe and the European Union are preceded by an introduction to international human rights law. The afternoon session of the second day was devoted to the discussion of Turkish legislation on the most problematic 3 areas, namely labour law, social security, special education and housing. The 3rd day was devoted to group work on case studies where the participants put the knowledge they gained through the training into practice. 

The local experts were selected by Bilgi University and the international expert was selected by RWI. The local experts were Dr. İdil Işıl Gül (Istanbul Bilgi University Faculty of Law),  Assoc. Prof. Gülsevil Alpagut (Istanbul University Faculty of Law), Ms. Güler Polat (Head of the Disability Law Commission at Istanbul Bar), Mr. Ömer İnal Durmuş and Ms. Türkay Asma. The international expert was Ms. Maria Ventegodt Liisberg (Researcher, Danish Institute for Human Rights).

The compilation was also available in braille for blind participants.
