Workshop on “Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey and CSO Cooperation for Monitoring Discrimination”, 15-16 June 2016

“Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey and CSO Cooperation for Monitoring Discrimination” Workshop took place in Ankara on 15-16 June 2016. The meeting was organized in cooperation between TASCO Turkey (Technical Assistance for Civil Society Organizations) and İHOP (Human Rights Joint Platform) with the support of STGM (Civil Society Development Centre). The one-and-a-half-day workshop targeted to develop a model for cooperation of a wide CSO coalition to monitor the establishment and performance of the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey as well as to design a roadmap for this cooperation model. Burcu Yeşiladalı, a member Istanbul Bilgi University Human Rights Law Research Center and Asst. Prof. Dr. Ulaş Karan from Istanbul Bilgi University Faculty of Law joined the workshop. Ulaş Karan gave a speech on international standards of institutions with the mandate of fighting discrimination and made a comparative analysis between these standards and the Law on Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey. Karan also explained why it is important to monitor the practices of the Human Rights and Equality Institution and how it can be made possible.

Since 2014, there has been a number of workshops held and activities implemented in order to operationalize the civic participation for the enactment of a framework law to fight discrimination in Turkey and establishment of an effective equality institution in line with international standards. Human Rights Law Reseach Center has been providing its support to these meetings organized in cooperation among TACSO Turkey, İHOP and Kaos GL and all related activities.
